Patti Agapi - Artist Statement
I am a mixed media and collage painter, and a love for the process drives my work. An intuitive application of mixed media materials evolves and guides the composition; each piece a process of building up, covering up, fermenting and finally revealing. I begin with a collage underpainting and gradually manifest variations in colour and form. Always striving to conjure interesting manifestations in layer and texture, I am guided by the relationship between mediums and their alchemic responses.
My process echoes the ongoing internal perceptions that arise while I create. The resulting work is a visual record of those thoughts (hopes, fears, anxieties, dreams). Each wave of thought accumulates into intuitive, subtle layers of ideas and epiphanies. I hope people experience the journey in my work, taking in the depth and layers and sensing past incarnations. Each piece is a unique microcosm that reveals a story to be interpreted infinite ways.
A new series of work ruminates upon the concept of circle as metaphor (for life/living). The resulting work will be presented in a solo exhibition at Lee Contemporary Art, August 2019.
Patti Agapi is a self-taught and ever-evolving Canadian mixed media artist. Working with paint, collage elements and often found objects, Agapi creates intense abstract paintings. Always striving to conjure interesting variations in layer and texture, Agapi’s work reflects the creative process. Intuitively guided in her practice, she is influenced by the relationship between mediums and their alchemic responses.
She has exhibited and worked in the Orillia Arts community since 2007 where she now spends most days in her downtown studio. She also operates an art blog that features inspiring artists and art businesses called Art + Chocolate
A bit of my creative process in a feature for the Images Studio Tour.
